On dussehra, people burn effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad, symbols of evil, and at the same time take a vow to remove bad habits within themselves. In the Treta yuga, Lord Shriram killed Ravana on Ashwin Shukla Dashmi, while Mother Durga ended Mahishasura on this date and called Mahishasuramardini.
